Here&#8217;s what he learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I Learned Catalyzing 3,000 Discovery Bible Study Groups in Ghana<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TLDR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discovery Bible Study (DBS) groups are simple, reproducible, and led by ordinary people \u2014 no seminary required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A disciple making movement (DMM) grows when new believers immediately become disciple makers themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zero budget, zero buildings, and zero paid staff produced more fruit in 14 years in Ghana than 25 years inside a mega-church structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The key is obedience and multiplication, not programs and attendance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can start today \u2014 wherever you are in the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Background: From Mega-Church to Movement {#my-background}<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I spent 25 years serving in two large US mega-churches. Big buildings. Big budgets. Big staff. Big programs. And real fruit \u2014 I am grateful for every season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when I arrived in northern Ghana 14 years ago, none of that infrastructure existed. No church buildings. No budget. No paid staff. No programs. What we had was the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and ordinary African believers willing to obey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened next changed everything I thought I knew about ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 14 years, we saw approximately <strong>3,000 Discovery Bible Study groups<\/strong> form across northern Ghana \u2014 reaching an estimated <strong>20,000 people<\/strong> at zero cost. No salaries. No buildings. No denominational machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 50 years of ministry, I have never been involved in something so fruitful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what I learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a Discovery Bible Study Group? {#what-is-dbs}<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a simple, reproducible method of reading Scripture in a small group setting. Unlike a traditional Bible study where one teacher lectures, a DBS invites every participant to discover truth for themselves directly from the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical DBS group follows a short, repeatable format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Look back<\/strong> \u2014 share how you applied last week&#8217;s passage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Look up<\/strong> \u2014 read a Bible story together and answer three questions:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does this passage say?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does it mean?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you obey it this week?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Look forward<\/strong> \u2014 who will you share this with before next week?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s it. No commentary books. No seminary degree. No special equipment. A DBS works in a mud hut in Ghana, a living room in Armenia, or a coffee shop in the US. <a href=\"https:\/\/novo.org\/dbs\">Novo Mission describes it well<\/a>: &#8220;Light enough for anyone, anywhere, to replicate with their friends and family. Deep enough to make surrendered and transformed disciples of Jesus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power of DBS is not just in what people learn \u2014 it is in what they do. Every session ends with an action step and a name: someone they will share with before next week. That single habit is what turns a Bible study into a movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I Learned: 7 Lessons from 3,000 Groups {#7-lessons}<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Ordinary People Are the Strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the mega-church model, the pastor is the disciple maker. Everyone else attends. In a DMM, every new believer becomes a disciple maker immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Ghana, the men and women leading those 3,000 groups were farmers, traders, mothers, and elders. None of them had formal theological training. All of them had an encounter with Jesus and a willingness to share it with the next person in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not say &#8220;Go and build churches.&#8221; He said &#8220;Go and make disciples.&#8221; The Great Commission was given to ordinary people. That is still who He is calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The Model Has to Be Reproducible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a new believer in a remote village cannot replicate what you did, the movement stops with you. Every method, every tool, every meeting format must pass the reproducibility test: Can someone with no resources, no training, and no budget do this next week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DBS passes that test. A three-question format that anyone can memorize and lead in any language, in any context, with nothing but a Bible or a Bible story \u2014 that is reproducible. A Sunday morning service with a worship band, a projector, and a 45-minute sermon is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Obedience Matters More Than Knowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Western Christianity tends to measure discipleship by what people know. We give tests, run courses, and certify graduates. In a DBS, the only measure that matters is obedience: Did you do what the passage said? Did you share it with someone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/discipleship.org\/blog\/how-to-lead-a-discovery-bible-study\/\">Discipleship.org notes<\/a> that one of the keys to healthy missional community life is having the Bible at the center \u2014 not as content to consume, but as truth to obey. In Ghana, we saw this produce transformed families, restored marriages, and reconciled communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Prayer Is the Foundation, Not the Filler<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most church meetings I attended in the US, prayer opened and closed the service. In the DMM work in Ghana, prayer was the engine. Every new area we entered, we prayed for a Person of Peace \u2014 someone God had already prepared to receive the message and share it with their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/renew.org\/7-steps-to-catalyze-a-disciple-making-movement\/\">Renew.org identifies<\/a> prayer as a core catalyst for any disciple making movement. We found this to be true without exception. The groups that prayed together consistently multiplied. The groups that did not, stalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. New Believers Should Not Wait<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In traditional church culture, new believers are often placed in &#8220;new believer&#8221; classes for months before they are trusted to do anything. In a DMM, new believers start sharing immediately \u2014 because the most powerful witness is always a fresh one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new believer in Ghana who tells their neighbor &#8220;I was changed by what I read in this story&#8221; is more compelling than a polished sermon. Their credibility is built on transformation, not training. The moment they wait, the moment passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. No Buildings, No Budget Is a Feature \u2014 Not a Bug<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we started, I thought the absence of resources was our biggest challenge. It turned out to be our greatest advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When there is no building to maintain, no staff to pay, and no program to fund, multiplication is frictionless. A new DBS group can start this week with two people and a passage of Scripture. There is nothing to set up and nothing to sustain except obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overhead that makes institutional church scalable also makes it heavy. DMM travels light \u2014 and that is exactly what the Great Commission requires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The Harvest Is Already There<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus said &#8220;The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.&#8221; In northern Ghana, that was literally true. People were hungry for God. They were ready. What they needed was not a building or a budget \u2014 they needed someone to show them how to open the Bible and obey what they found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same is true in your city, your neighborhood, and your network. The harvest is already there. The question is whether we are willing to use tools simple enough to reach it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Simple Wins Every Time {#why-simple-wins}<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every large movement in history \u2014 from the early church to the Reformation to the revivals of the 18th century \u2014 has been driven by simple, reproducible practices that ordinary people could carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complexity is the enemy of multiplication. The moment a method requires a professional, a building, or a budget, it stops multiplying and starts depending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DBS is simple by design. Three questions. One action step. One name. That simplicity is what allowed 3,000 groups to form in northern Ghana without a central organization managing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverybiblestudy.org\/article\/002\/dmm\">Discovery Bible Study groups<\/a> work in every culture because they are built on the same foundation that launched the first church: ordinary people, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How You Can Start a Discovery Bible Study Group {#how-to-start}<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to go to Ghana to start a movement. You need three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A passage of Scripture<\/strong> \u2014 start with a story from the Gospels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two or three people<\/strong> \u2014 a neighbor, a coworker, a family member<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Three questions<\/strong> \u2014 What does it say? What does it mean? How will you obey it?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet weekly. End every session with two commitments: one step of obedience, and one person you will share the passage with before next week. Then watch what God does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method is not magic. The power is in the Word and the Spirit.
