We cannot heal a culture of violence merely by telling angry people to calm down.
Public campaigns may condemn hatred. Laws may punish violent behavior. Leaders may call for unity. But none of these can remove bitterness from the human heart.
Violence Begins Before the First Blow
Violence does not begin with a weapon. It begins with anger that is allowed to grow. It begins with an offense that is repeatedly rehearsed. It begins when people are taught to view others as enemies rather than neighbors.
Hatred becomes language. Language becomes division. Division becomes retaliation. And retaliation produces another generation determined to settle the score.
Our world does not merely have a violence problem. We have a discipleship problem.
People are being discipled every day by voices that teach them whom to fear, whom to blame, whom to hate, and how to take revenge.
If the followers of Jesus do not intentionally make disciples of peace, the culture will continue making disciples of anger.
Jesus Offers a Different Way
Jesus did not merely tell His followers to avoid physical violence. He taught them to deal with the hatred, pride, resentment, and unforgiveness from which violence grows.
He taught His disciples to love their enemies. To pray for those who persecute them. To forgive those who have wounded them. To refuse retaliation. To overcome evil with good. To become peacemakers.
These commands are not signs of weakness. They require extraordinary spiritual strength.
It is easy to return hatred for hatred. It is easy to strike back. It is easy to gather people around a common enemy. But only a life transformed by Jesus can absorb an offense without passing it on to someone else.
Peace Must Be Learned and Practiced
People do not automatically know how to forgive. They must be discipled. They must learn how to take their pain to Jesus instead of turning it into revenge. They must learn how to confront wrongdoing without becoming controlled by hatred.
They must learn that forgiveness does not mean pretending evil never happened. It means surrendering the right to personally repay evil with evil.
This kind of transformation rarely happens through a sermon alone. It happens when disciples walk closely with other people. They listen to their wounds. They open the Scriptures together. They model forgiveness. They help them obey Jesus in actual conflicts. They remain present when reconciliation is difficult. They teach them to make peace, and then to help others become peacemakers.
Imagine Communities Filled With Peacemakers
Imagine what could happen if every neighborhood contained disciples who knew how to interrupt cycles of revenge. Imagine marriages where people confessed quickly and forgave freely. Imagine young people being discipled before anger hardened into hatred. Imagine churches known not for adding to political hostility, ethnic tension, or social division, but for demonstrating the reconciling power of Jesus. Imagine former enemies eating together, praying together, serving together, and making disciples together.
That is more than conflict resolution. That is the Kingdom of God becoming visible.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).
The world has many commentators describing the violence. It has many activists protesting the violence. It has many officials attempting to restrain the violence. But what our culture desperately needs is an army of ordinary disciples who carry the peace of Jesus into angry homes, divided communities, and wounded relationships.
The cycle of violence will not end merely because people are told to stop fighting. It will end when people are transformed by Jesus, taught to forgive, and equipped to make peace.
