What If the Strategy Was Simpler Than You Thought?

After 14 years in northern Ghana, I have seen something I cannot explain apart from God. More than 3,000 Discovery Bible Study groups started. Tens of thousands of people hearing the Word. Communities transformed. Leaders raised up. And it did not cost a single dollar in buildings, staff salaries, or programs.

The tool at the center of all of it? A simple, reproducible Bible study method called Discovery Bible Study, or DBS.

If you have never heard of it, I want to walk you through how it works and why it is changing lives on every continent.

What Is a Discovery Bible Study?

A Discovery Bible Study is a facilitated group conversation around a passage of Scripture. It is not a lecture. The leader does not need a seminary degree. In fact, the leader's main job is to ask questions, not give answers.

The format is simple enough that a new believer can lead one within days of learning it. That reproducibility is not a side benefit. It is the point.

Jesus said in Matthew 28:19-20, "Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." The goal is obedience, not information transfer. Discovery Bible Study is built around that distinction.

The Basic DBS Process

A typical Discovery Bible Study follows a pattern that has remained consistent whether a group meets in a village in Ghana, a living room in Nebraska, or a rented space in Nairobi.

1. Care and Share
The group opens by asking: What are you grateful for this week? What is a challenge you are facing? This builds genuine relationship and creates space for prayer.

2. Accountability from Last Week
Groups ask: Last week we talked about obeying a specific thing from Scripture, how did that go? This step is what separates DBS from a typical Bible study. Obedience is expected and tracked.

3. Read the Passage
A short passage of Scripture is read aloud, often two or three times by different group members.

4. Retell It
Someone retells the passage in their own words, without looking at the text. This step builds memory and engagement. It also immediately reveals what people actually understood.

5. Discovery Questions
The group works through three questions:

• What does this passage say about God or Jesus?
• What does this passage say about people?
• What does this passage say we should do?

These questions are not theological traps. They are open doors. They allow the Holy Spirit to do the work of conviction and revelation that no teacher can manufacture.

6. Obedience Step
Each person answers: What is one specific thing you will do this week in response to what we read? And: Who will you share this with?

That last question is where multiplication begins.

Why This Method Works

In my years of working in northern Ghana, I watched something happen that surprised even me. When we stopped putting trained outsiders at the center and started equipping ordinary believers to lead DBS groups, the numbers exploded. Not because of our effort, but because the method was simple enough to travel without us.

Reproducibility is the engine of every movement God has ever used.

The early church did not grow because of eloquent preachers in large venues. It grew because ordinary men and women shared what they had seen, obeyed what they had heard, and trained others to do the same. Acts 2:42 describes them devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Every day. In homes. Together.

Discovery Bible Study recovers that rhythm.

Anyone Can Lead One

This is the part that stops most Western Christians: the leader does not need to have all the answers. The questions do the work. The Scripture does the work. The Holy Spirit does the work.

I have seen farmers in rural Ghana lead DBS groups that went on to plant churches. I have seen a single group multiply into a dozen within a year. Not because of outside money or foreign expertise, but because local believers trusted the Word and trusted the process.

Romans 10:17 reminds us: "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." When people encounter Scripture directly, in their own language, through their own discovery, something happens that no lecture can replicate.

You do not need to go to Ghana to start a Discovery Bible Study. You can start one this week.

Pick a passage. Invite two or three people. Ask the questions. Watch what happens when the Word is unleashed in a room full of people ready to obey.
