But when we picture what a New Testament church should look like, we usually picture a building — a platform, rows of seats, a parking lot. Open the Book of Acts and you will not find one anywhere. What you will find instead is a movement carried from house to house.

The Pattern Acts Actually Shows Us

On the day the church was born, this is what it looked like — and it became the daily rhythm that followed:

“They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer. Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together, and had all things in common. They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need. Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved.”

Acts 2:42–47, WEB

“Every day, in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and preaching Jesus, the Christ.”

Acts 5:42, WEB

Paul described his own ministry the same way — not one method, but two, side by side:

“…how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house.”

Acts 20:20, WEB

And when you look for where the actual gatherings happened, you find real addresses — not a church campus:

“He came to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.”

Acts 12:12, WEB

“They went out of the prison, and entered into Lydia’s house. When they had seen the brothers, they encouraged them, and departed.”

Acts 16:40, WEB

“He went into the house of a certain man named Justus… whose house was next door to the synagogue. Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his house. Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.”

Acts 18:7–8, WEB

Not one building. A network of homes. Not an institution people attended — a movement that multiplied.

So Where Did the Building Come From?

For roughly the first three centuries, “church” meant a body of believers, not a piece of property — often because it could not safely be otherwise. That began to change in the 4th century, once following Jesus was no longer costly and believers could gather in the open. Dedicated buildings followed, many adapted from Roman civic halls. “New Testament church” and “a building” are not the same thing in Scripture. Church is people, meeting anywhere, multiplying.

Both/And, Not Either/Or

To be clear, this is not an argument against the traditional church. We believe in it. Traditional congregations, in buildings, with faithful pastors and pulpits, have carried the gospel for centuries and will keep doing so — they are not the problem to be solved.

But the Great Commission will not be finished by addition alone. Reaching every remaining people and place calls for both the traditional church we already have and thousands of simple, reproducible house communities that can go where a building never could and multiply faster than one ever will. This is not either/or. It is both/and — which is why every group we plant aims to become a true House to House Fellowship alongside, not instead of, the church we already know and love.

More than one type of church shows up across Scripture — here is a short look at that pattern:

Why This Matters for Multiplication

A house church costs nothing to start. It needs no land, no mortgage, no building committee, no professional clergy — just a family willing to open their door and obey what they are learning. That is exactly why it can multiply as fast as people can be discipled. A building-centered picture of “real church” quietly puts a ceiling on how far and how fast a movement can grow — and it is often the very thing that keeps a new believer from picturing themselves as capable of leading one.

What we have pictured as church has proven too difficult to multiply at a pace that could actually finish the Great Commission. It is time to look closer at what made the early church multiply at a pace fast enough that, within a generation, its enemies said this about it:

“These who have turned the world upside down have come here also.”

Acts 17:6, WEB

That kind of pace did not come from better buildings. It came from ordinary households obeying what they had heard and passing it on — the same pattern behind every group we plant today.

Breathe in — hear the Word.
