Can You Be a Disciple and Not Multiply Disciples? · Part 13
There comes a moment when conviction must become commitment.
Not someday. Not when life becomes easier. Not when we feel more qualified. Not when someone finally gives us permission.
Today.
Jesus did not save us merely so we could attend church, accumulate Bible knowledge, serve in ministries, and remain spiritually busy. He entrusted the gospel to us so it would continue through us.
The gospel was never meant to stop with you.
What Has Multiplied Because You Follow Jesus?
That is not an easy question. But it may be one of the most important questions we will ever answer.
Who is following Jesus because you shared the gospel with them? Who are you personally helping obey Jesus? Who have you trained to disciple someone else?
Many Christians have followed Jesus for years but have never made even one disciple. We have attended. Studied. Served. Given. Led. But we have not multiplied.
We have sometimes buried the gospel beneath church activity, Bible knowledge, fear, insecurity, busyness, and excuses. Like the servant in Jesus’ parable, we have protected what was entrusted to us instead of multiplying it.
But today can be different.
Repentance Is More Than Feeling Sorry
Repentance means turning. It means changing direction. It means refusing to continue living as though disciple-making belongs only to pastors, missionaries, and unusually gifted Christians.
Jesus gave the command to make disciples to His followers. That includes us.
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you.”, Matthew 28:19-20 WEB
The question is no longer whether Jesus commanded it. The question is whether we will obey.
From This Day Forward
From this day forward, I will pray.
I will pray for lost people by name. I will pray for open doors. I will pray for persons of peace. I will pray for the Holy Spirit to lead me toward those He has already prepared.
From this day forward, I will go.
I will not wait for people to enter a church building. I will enter their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and relationships with humility, love, and the good news of Jesus.
From this day forward, I will share.
I will share my testimony. I will share Bible stories. I will share the gospel clearly and lovingly. I will not remain silent because I am afraid of rejection.
From this day forward, I will disciple.
I will help people follow Jesus, obey His commands, and immediately share what they are learning with others. I will not merely transfer information. I will model a life of obedience.
From this day forward, I will train.
I will train ordinary believers to pray, go, share, disciple, and multiply. I will not make people dependent upon me. I will equip them to obey Jesus without me.
From this day forward, I will release.
I will trust the Holy Spirit in new believers. I will allow emerging leaders to lead. I will bless people to go farther and multiply faster than I ever could alone.
From this day forward, I will pursue generations.
I will not stop with one disciple. I will teach every disciple to make disciples. I will pray for disciples who make disciples who make disciples. Because the Great Commission will not be completed through addition alone. It will be completed through multiplication.
You Do Not Have to Know Everything
You do not need a seminary degree. You do not need a title. You do not need a platform. You do not need to wait until you feel ready.
You need the Holy Spirit. You need the Word of God. You need obedience. You need one person willing to take the next step with you.
Your first disciple may already be near you. They may be sitting at your table. Working beside you. Living next door. Calling you for advice. Watching how you respond to hardship. Waiting for someone to help them discover Jesus.
Let Today Become a Line in the Sand
Perhaps the gospel has not multiplied through your life yet. That does not have to be the end of your story.
You can repent. You can begin again. You can make a concrete commitment before God.
Not merely: “I should make disciples.”
But: “From this day forward, I will multiply disciples.”
I will pray. I will go. I will share. I will disciple. I will train. I will release. I will pursue multiplying generations.
Jesus has entrusted the gospel to us. We must not bury it. We must not keep it. We must multiply it.
The gospel was never meant to stop with you.
