Twelve Compelling Reasons We Must Make Disciples · Part 01
We are deeply concerned about the direction of our culture.
We see broken families. Confused identities. Political division. Violence. Addiction. Corruption. Loneliness. A generation growing up without a clear foundation for truth.
We keep asking: How can we change the culture?
We vote. We campaign. We protest. We create programs. We pass laws. We build organizations.
Some of these efforts are necessary. But none of them can do what only Jesus can do.
Politics cannot disciple a nation.
Laws can restrain evil, but they cannot transform the human heart.
Programs can address symptoms, but they cannot create new people.
Education can provide information, but information alone cannot produce love, holiness, integrity, compassion, or obedience.
The culture will not change until people do.
And people do not change merely because society gives them better rules. They change when their hearts are transformed.
Jesus’ answer for a broken world was not merely better institutions. His answer was transformed people who would help transform other people.
Jesus made disciples. He taught them the truth. He showed them how to live. He called them to obey. Then He sent them to make more disciples. Those disciples carried His life, His truth, and His Kingdom into families, neighborhoods, cities, and nations.
That is why disciple-making matters far beyond the individual believer.
Culture is shaped by people. People are shaped by what they love, believe, obey, tolerate, model, and reproduce.
Every culture is being discipled by someone.
Children are being discipled. Families are being discipled. Leaders are being discipled. Teachers, politicians, artists, athletes, and influencers are being discipled.
The question is not whether people are being discipled. The question is: Who is discipling them. And what kind of people are they becoming?
When followers of Jesus neglect disciple-making, other voices gladly fill the vacuum. Media disciples. Politics disciples. Education disciples. Entertainment disciples. Social media disciples.
Every day, people are being formed into someone’s image. Jesus has called us to help form them into His.
We cannot curse the darkness while refusing to make disciples. We cannot complain about cultural decline while neglecting the strategy Jesus gave us for transforming people. We cannot expect a godly culture without people who are learning to love, follow, and obey Jesus.
Disciple-making is not merely about helping one person become more religious. It is about forming people who love God, love their neighbors, forgive their enemies, honor marriage, care for the vulnerable, walk in integrity, seek justice, speak truth, and make more disciples.
One transformed person can change a family. One transformed family can influence a neighborhood. Multiplying disciples can transform communities. Movements of disciples can reach nations.
Over the next twelve articles, we will explore twelve compelling reasons we must make disciples. Not only for the sake of the individual, and not only for the sake of the church, but for the sake of the world around us.
Because the culture will not change until people do.
And Jesus has already given us His strategy: Make disciples. Teach them to obey. Train them to make more disciples.
The future of our culture may depend on whether ordinary followers of Jesus take that command seriously.
