Can You Be a Disciple and Not Multiply Disciples?. Part 05

What if the clearest evidence that we are following Jesus is that our lives increasingly begin to look like His?

Jesus said:

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”. Luke 6:40 WEB

Jesus did not invite people merely to believe certain truths about Him. He invited them to follow Him. “Come after me.” “Learn from me.” “Remain in me.” “Do what I have commanded you.”

The goal of discipleship is not simply knowing more about Jesus. The goal is becoming more like Jesus.

Jesus Sought the Lost

Jesus did not spend all His time with people who already believed. He intentionally went to those who were far from God. He crossed cultural barriers. He entered homes others avoided. He welcomed sinners. He searched for lost sheep.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”. Luke 19:10 WEB

If we are becoming like Jesus, shouldn’t we increasingly care about those who are still lost? Shouldn’t we know their names? Shouldn’t we pray for them? Shouldn’t we spend time with them? Shouldn’t we share the good news with them?

Jesus Made Disciples

Jesus did not simply gather crowds. He called people to follow Him. He taught them to obey. He corrected them when they were wrong. He demonstrated how to pray, serve, heal, love, forgive, and proclaim the Kingdom. Then He sent them out to do what they had watched Him do.

Jesus did not measure success only by how many people listened to Him. He invested deeply in people who would continue the mission.

If we are becoming like Jesus, shouldn’t we also be helping someone else follow Him?

Jesus Developed Leaders

Jesus saw potential in ordinary people. Peter was a fisherman. Matthew was a tax collector. Others were largely unknown men from overlooked places. Jesus did not wait until they appeared qualified. He called them, trained them, entrusted them with responsibility, and allowed them to learn through both success and failure.

Jesus was not trying to make Himself indispensable. He was preparing His disciples to carry on the work after He returned to the Father.

If we are becoming like Jesus, shouldn’t we increasingly be developing others? Who are we encouraging? Who are we equipping? Who are we releasing? Who could continue the work without us?

Jesus Multiplied Workers

Jesus knew that the harvest was too great for only a few workers.

“The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into his harvest.”. Matthew 9:37. 38 WEB

Then He sent His disciples into that harvest. Later, He sent even more. Jesus did not build a ministry that depended entirely upon Him doing everything personally. He multiplied workers. He turned followers into fishers. He transformed disciples into disciple-makers. He sent ordinary believers to do what He had been doing.

If we are becoming like Jesus, shouldn’t our lives also produce more workers for the harvest?

This Is the Test

We can attend church for years. We can study the Bible. We can listen to sermons. We can complete courses. We can learn the language of discipleship. But knowledge alone does not prove that we are becoming like our Teacher.

Jesus sought the lost. Are we seeking them?
Jesus made disciples. Are we making them?
Jesus developed leaders. Are we developing them?
Jesus multiplied workers. Are we multiplying them?

This is not a call to earn God’s love. It is a call to examine the direction of our lives. None of us reflects Jesus perfectly. But if we are truly following Him, we should increasingly begin to walk where He walked, love whom He loved, and do what He did.

A disciple does not merely admire the Teacher. A disciple becomes like the Teacher.

So here is the question: If you continue following your present path, will your life increasingly look like the life of Jesus?

And when you look behind you, is anyone else learning to follow Jesus because they are following your example?
