Can You Be a Disciple and Not Multiply Disciples? · Part 10
The gospel traveled through generations to reach you.
Someone refused to remain silent. Someone prayed for you. Someone shared the truth with you. Someone opened the Scriptures. Someone patiently answered your questions. Someone helped you take your first steps of obedience.
Because they were faithful, the gospel reached you.
But now there is a question every follower of Jesus must answer: Will the gospel continue through you, or will it stop with you?
The Gospel Was Entrusted to You
Paul gave Timothy a clear picture of spiritual multiplication:
“The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”. 2 Timothy 2:2 WEB
Look carefully at the generations: Paul → Timothy → faithful people → others.
Paul did not merely teach Timothy to become a mature Christian. He taught Timothy to pass the gospel to people who would pass it to still others. The goal was never simply addition. The goal was multiplication.
The gospel was not meant to reach Timothy and stop. And it was not meant to reach us and stop.
Every Christian Is Part of a Generational Chain
Think about your own spiritual story. Who first told you about Jesus? Who prayed for you when you were far from God? Who helped you understand the gospel? Who taught you to read the Bible? Who encouraged you when your faith was weak?
Your relationship with Jesus did not begin in isolation. Someone carried the gospel to you. Perhaps it was a parent. A pastor. A missionary. A friend. A coworker. Or an ordinary believer whose name may never be widely known on earth, but whose faithfulness is known in heaven.
Their obedience became part of your salvation story. Now you are holding what someone else faithfully delivered.
The question is: Who is receiving it from you?
It Is Possible to Receive the Gospel but Never Reproduce It
This is the uncomfortable truth. A person can attend church for decades and never make a disciple. We can listen to thousands of sermons. Read dozens of Christian books. Participate in Bible studies. Serve on committees. Give generously. Lead ministries. And still never personally help another person follow Jesus.
We may become more informed without becoming more fruitful. We may become faithful church attenders without becoming multiplying disciples. We may deeply appreciate the person who brought the gospel to us while never becoming that person for someone else.
The gospel reached us. But it went no farther. We became the broken link in the generational chain.
What If Everyone Followed Jesus the Way You Do?
This is a difficult question, but we need to ask it honestly: If every Christian reproduced at the same rate you do, how long would it take to reach the world?
Would new disciples be made? Would new leaders be developed? Would new groups begin? Would the gospel enter new households? Would another spiritual generation be born? Or would the gospel stop with the current generation?
The Great Commission will not be finished by admiration. It will be finished when ordinary disciples accept responsibility for multiplying what they have received. It begins when each of us says: “The gospel will not stop with me.”
Jesus Did Not Call Us to Become the Last Link
Jesus did not say: “Receive the gospel, attend church, and wait for heaven.” He said:
“जाऊ, सबै जातिहरूलाई चेला बनाऊ, र तिनीहरूलाई मैले तिमीहरूलाई आज्ञा गरेका सबै कुराहरू पालन गर्न सिकाऊ।” मत्ती २८:१९, २० (WEB)
Jesus did not call us merely to believe. He called us to follow. And when we follow Jesus, He leads us toward people. He leads us to the lost. He leads us into households. Then He commands us to help them obey everything He commanded, including the command to make disciples.
A disciple who never helps another person follow Jesus is not fulfilling the purpose for which Jesus sent His disciples into the world. Love does not allow us to confuse Christian activity with obedience to the Great Commission.
Your First Disciple May Be Closer Than You Think
You do not need to cross an ocean to begin. Look around you. Your first disciple may be sitting at your dinner table. It may be your spouse. Your child. Your grandchild. Your friend. Your neighbor. Your coworker. Someone in your church who has attended for years but has never learned how to follow Jesus personally and help someone else do the same.
You do not need a platform. You do not need a theological degree. You do not need permission from an organization. You do not need to know everything. You need someone to love. A Bible to open. A story to share. A command of Jesus to obey. And the courage to begin.
Do Not Only Make a Disciple. Start a New Generation
The goal is not simply to help one person become a Christian. Help that person follow Jesus. Teach them to hear His Word. Teach them to obey what He says. Teach them to share their story. Teach them to share the gospel. Teach them to make another disciple. Then the gospel does not stop with them either.
One disciple becomes two. Two become four. Four become eight. The gospel moves from person to person. From household to household. From community to community. From generation to generation. This is how ordinary believers become part of an extraordinary movement of God.
Imagine the Generations You May Never See
You may begin discipling one person today. That person may disciple another. That disciple may reach a household. That household may begin a group. That group may multiply into several communities. Those communities may eventually carry the gospel to people you will never meet, in places you will never visit.
You may never see every generation that comes after your obedience. But heaven will. Your decision to begin with one person could influence hundreds, or even thousands, of people after you are gone.
That is the power of spiritual multiplication. And that is the tragedy of a broken chain. When we refuse to multiply, we are not only affecting ourselves. We may be withholding the gospel from generations that were meant to hear it through us.
Someone Refused to Let the Gospel Stop With Them
That is why you know Jesus. Someone obeyed. Someone sacrificed. Someone spoke when it would have been easier to remain silent. Someone took responsibility for your spiritual future.
Now the gospel has reached your hands. You can admire it. Study it. Defend it. Celebrate it. Or you can pass it on.
One day, Jesus will not only ask what we knew. He will examine what we did with what He entrusted to us. Did we bury it? Or did we multiply it?
You were not reached to become the final destination of the gospel. You were reached to become another link in an unbroken chain, stretching from the first disciples to every nation, tribe, people, and language.
So find one person. Open the Bible. Share what Jesus has done for you. Help them obey Him. Teach them to do the same for someone else.
And make this your commitment before God: The generational chain will not break with me. The gospel will not stop with me.
