Twelve Compelling Reasons We Must Make Disciples · Part 05

Watch: Children Become What Adults Reproduce

Every generation is discipling the next one, even when it does not realize it.

Children are always learning. They are watching what we celebrate. They are absorbing what we tolerate. They are noticing what receives our time, attention, money, and affection. They hear what we say about God, but they also watch how we live when life becomes difficult.

The question is not whether our children will be discipled. The question is who, or what, will disciple them.

Someone Is Shaping Their Hearts

If parents and grandparents do not intentionally disciple the next generation, other voices will gladly take their place.

Social media will disciple them. Entertainment will disciple them. Their friends will disciple them. Celebrities, influencers, advertising, political movements, and popular culture will all tell them what to believe, what to value, and who they should become.

The world is not waiting until our children are adults before attempting to shape them. Why should the Church wait?

Children Learn More From What We Reproduce

We cannot pass on what we merely admire. We reproduce what we actually live.

Children may forget many of our words, but they will remember whether prayer was natural in our home. They will remember whether forgiveness was practiced or merely preached. They will remember whether strangers were welcomed, the hurting were served, and the lost were pursued. They will remember whether following Jesus was the center of family life, or simply another activity on the weekly calendar.

Moses told God’s people to teach His words diligently to their children:

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”

Discipleship was never meant to happen only inside a church building. It was meant to happen around tables, along roads, during ordinary conversations, and throughout the rhythms of everyday life.

We Are Reproducing Something

Every adult is leaving an inheritance. Not merely money, property, or a family name. We are passing on attitudes, priorities, habits, fears, convictions, and patterns of obedience.

A generation that sees passive Christianity may reproduce passive Christianity. A generation that sees prayerless Christianity may reproduce prayerless Christianity. A generation that sees believers attending church but never making disciples may assume that attendance is the full extent of following Jesus.

But a generation that watches ordinary adults obey Jesus, share their faith, serve others, make disciples, and sacrifice for the Great Commission may begin to believe: This is what Christians do.

Our Children Need More Than Protection

We often pray that God will protect our children from the world. That prayer matters. But our children need more than protection from darkness. They need preparation to carry the light.

They do not merely need to be kept from evil. They need to be equipped to overcome evil with good. They need to know how to hear God’s voice through Scripture, obey Jesus, share the gospel, make disciples, and help others do the same.

The goal is not simply to raise children who remain in church. The goal is to raise disciples who follow Jesus wherever He sends them.

Let Them See a Faith Worth Reproducing

Our children should see us pray for the nations. Let them hear us speak about people who do not yet know Jesus. Let them watch us forgive. Let them see us repent when we are wrong. Let them participate as we serve neighbors, welcome strangers, care for the poor, share Bible stories, and disciple others.

Do not merely tell them that Jesus is important. Build a life that demonstrates He is worthy of everything.

The future of the family, and much of the future of our culture, will be shaped by what this generation reproduces in the next one.

We are discipling our children right now. The only question is whether we are doing it intentionally.

What picture of following Jesus are the children around you learning from your life?
