Twelve Compelling Reasons We Must Make Disciples · Part 11
We keep trying to change culture from the outside in. Jesus changes it from the inside out.
We look to better laws, better programs, better schools, better leaders, and better institutions. And all of those can matter. But culture is ultimately shaped by people. And if people remain unchanged, the deepest problems of a culture eventually return.
Jesus chose a different strategy. He changes hearts. Then changed people begin changing the people around them.
It Starts With One Person
Never underestimate what God can do through one transformed life. One person encounters Jesus. Their priorities change. Their relationships change. Their integrity changes. Their marriage changes. Their parenting changes. The way they handle money changes. The way they treat enemies changes. The way they forgive changes. The way they serve others changes.
And suddenly, the Gospel is no longer merely something they believe. It is something other people can see.
Then It Reaches a Household
One changed person can influence an entire household. A husband begins loving his wife differently. A wife begins extending grace differently. Parents begin discipling their children intentionally. Children begin seeing Christianity not merely as something practiced at church, but as a way of life.
Prayer enters the home. Scripture enters everyday conversations. Forgiveness replaces bitterness. Generosity replaces selfishness. Service replaces entitlement. Jesus becomes the center of the household. And that household begins becoming a light to others.
Then It Reaches a Neighborhood
Now imagine that household begins making disciples. Not merely inviting neighbors to church. Not merely handing out information. But intentionally helping people follow Jesus, obey Jesus, and teach others to do the same.
Another household changes. Then another. Then another. Relationships are restored. Addictions are confronted. Children gain godly examples. The lonely find family. The hurting find compassion. Enemies forgive one another. Integrity begins replacing corruption. Generosity begins replacing greed. Hope begins replacing despair.
That is how culture begins to change.
But Movements Are Born in Prayer
There is something we dare not miss. We cannot manufacture spiritual awakening. We cannot organize the Holy Spirit. We cannot create a movement simply by developing a better strategy. We must pray.
Before we ask God to change our communities, we must get on our knees and ask Him to change us. Before there is multiplication in the streets, there must be desperation in the prayer room.
Before we ask, “What strategy will reach our city?” perhaps we should first ask: “Who will cry out to God for our city?”

Watch it, and then ask yourself: What might God do if His people stopped merely talking about changing the culture and began unitedly crying out to Him for spiritual awakening?
And Then Multiplication Begins
Prayer is not a substitute for obedience. Prayer prepares us for obedience. We pray, and then we go.
One disciple makes another disciple. That disciple makes another. One household reaches another household. One group multiplies into another group. Ordinary believers begin carrying the Gospel into homes, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, villages, cities, and nations.
What began in one heart becomes a multiplying movement. And movements can change entire communities.
This is why disciple-making matters so deeply. We are not simply trying to produce better church members. We are asking God to produce transformed people who reproduce transformed people.
Culture Is Changed One Disciple at a Time
We look at the darkness around us and wonder: How could our culture ever change? The problems seem too large. The brokenness seems too deep. The forces shaping society seem too powerful.
But Jesus never asked you to transform an entire nation by yourself. He asked you to make disciples.
Start with one person. Pray. Go. Help that person obey Jesus. Teach them to help someone else obey Jesus. Then help those disciples multiply.
Because: One changed person can influence a household. One changed household can influence a neighborhood. One multiplying network of disciples can influence an entire community. And enough transformed communities can begin changing a nation.
Do not despise the small beginning. The person sitting across from you today may become the beginning of something far larger than either of you can imagine.
Culture does not ultimately change because Christians complain about the darkness. Culture changes when praying, obedient disciples carry the Light into the darkness, and multiply it.
