Story: Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35\u201341)<\/strong><\/p>\n Fear is one of the few experiences every person shares.<\/p>\n It doesn't matter where we live, how much money we have, or how strong our faith seems.<\/p>\n Sooner or later, every one of us finds ourselves in a storm.<\/p>\n Sometimes the storm is physical \u2014 a frightening medical diagnosis, an accident, a natural disaster.<\/p>\n Sometimes the storm is emotional \u2014 anxiety, depression, loneliness.<\/p>\n Sometimes it is financial \u2014 a lost job, unexpected bills, a business that suddenly struggles.<\/p>\n Sometimes it is the grief of losing someone we love or watching life unfold in ways we never expected.<\/p>\n The details are different.<\/p>\n The fear feels the same.<\/p>\n That is why the story of Jesus calming the storm has comforted believers for nearly two thousand years.<\/p>\n After a long day of teaching, Jesus told His disciples,<\/p>\n "Let's go over to the other side of the lake."<\/em><\/p>\n They obeyed.<\/p>\n It is important to notice something.<\/p>\n The storm did not come because they were outside God's will.<\/p>\n The storm came while they were obeying Jesus.<\/p>\n Many people assume that following Christ should remove life's difficulties.<\/p>\n This story teaches the opposite.<\/p>\n Faith does not eliminate storms.<\/p>\n It changes how we walk through them.<\/p>\n As they crossed the Sea of Galilee, a violent windstorm suddenly arose. Waves crashed into the boat until it began filling with water.<\/p>\n Several of the disciples were experienced fishermen.<\/p>\n They had seen storms before.<\/p>\n Yet this one was different.<\/p>\n They believed they were going to die.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep.<\/p>\n To the disciples, His silence felt confusing.<\/p>\n To many believers today, God's silence can feel the same way.<\/p>\n "Where are You?"<\/p>\n "Don't You see what is happening?"<\/p>\n "Don't You care?"<\/p>\n Finally they woke Him and cried,<\/p>\n "Teacher, don't you care that we are dying?"<\/em><\/p>\n That question has echoed through history.<\/p>\n People ask it in hospital rooms.<\/p>\n Parents ask it while praying for children.<\/p>\n Missionaries ask it when ministry becomes difficult.<\/p>\n Disciple-makers ask it when years of labor seem fruitless.<\/p>\n Followers of Jesus have always wrestled with that question.<\/p>\n Jesus stood.<\/p>\n He spoke only a few words.<\/p>\n "Peace! Be still!"<\/em><\/p>\n Immediately the wind stopped.<\/p>\n The sea became completely calm.<\/p>\n The One who created the wind simply spoke to it.<\/p>\n The One who formed the seas commanded them to rest.<\/p>\n Then Jesus turned His attention away from the storm and toward His disciples.<\/p>\n "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?"<\/em><\/p>\n Notice what Jesus did not ask.<\/p>\n He did not ask why the storm came.<\/p>\n He did not explain why they suffered.<\/p>\n Instead, He asked about their trust.<\/p>\n The greatest lesson was never the weather.<\/p>\n It was the identity of the One in the boat.<\/p>\n The disciples were amazed and asked one another,<\/p>\n "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"<\/em><\/p>\n That is the question every listener must answer.<\/p>\n The story is not primarily about storms.<\/p>\n It is about Jesus.<\/p>\n Storms reveal what we believe about Him.<\/p>\n Sometimes Jesus calms the storm immediately.<\/p>\n Sometimes He allows the storm to continue.<\/p>\n But He never abandons His people.<\/p>\n His presence is greater than our panic.<\/p>\n His authority is greater than our circumstances.<\/p>\n His peace is greater than our fear.<\/p>\n This is why every disciple should carry this story.<\/p>\n When someone is overwhelmed by anxiety, don't simply tell them not to worry.<\/p>\n Tell them about Jesus in the boat.<\/p>\n When someone receives devastating medical news, tell them about Jesus in the boat.<\/p>\n When someone loses their job, tell them about Jesus in the boat.<\/p>\n When someone grieves the loss of a loved one, tell them about Jesus in the boat.<\/p>\n When someone wonders if God has forgotten them, tell them about Jesus in the boat.<\/p>\n People may not remember a long explanation about fear.<\/p>\n But they will remember frightened disciples, crashing waves, a sleeping Savior, one command to the wind, and a calm sea.<\/p>\n More importantly, they will remember that the safest place in the world is not where there are no storms.<\/p>\n The safest place is wherever Jesus is.<\/p>\nCarry This Story When…<\/h3>\n
