Can You Be a Disciple and Not Multiply Disciples? · Part 12
There comes a time when we must stop defending our lack of fruit and begin confessing it.
We have attended church. We have studied the Bible. We have listened to sermons, joined small groups, served on committees, and participated in ministries.
But where are our disciples? Who is following Jesus more faithfully because we intentionally invested in them? Who have we taught to obey Jesus. And to help someone else do the same?
These are uncomfortable questions. But perhaps our discomfort is necessary.
We Have Normalized What Jesus Never Intended
Somewhere along the way, Christianity became something we received rather than something we reproduced. We learned how to sit, listen, study, and consume.
But Jesus did not say: “Go and attend services.” He said:
“जाऊ, सबै जातिहरूलाई चेला बनाऊ, र तिनीहरूलाई मैले तिमीहरूलाई आज्ञा गरेका सबै कुराहरू पालन गर्न सिकाऊ।” मत्ती २८:१९, २० (WEB)
The Great Commission was not given only to pastors, missionaries, evangelists, or specially gifted Christians. It was given to disciples. Making disciples is not an advanced course for exceptional believers. It is part of following Jesus.
Our Excuses Sound Reasonable
“I don’t know enough.” “I’m not a leader.” “I’m too busy.” “I don’t know where to begin.” “I’m waiting for more training.” “I’m afraid I will say the wrong thing.”
But how many years will we continue using the same excuses? How much more do we need to know before we obey what we already understand?
The first disciples were not experts. They were ordinary people who followed Jesus, obeyed what He taught them, and shared it with others. They did not wait until they felt completely ready. They began with what they had.
Passivity Is Not Humility
Sometimes we call our inactivity humility. We say, “I’m not qualified.” But obedience does not begin with confidence in ourselves. It begins with confidence in Jesus.
Jesus did not command us to produce results only He can produce. He commanded us to go, teach, baptize, love, serve, pray, share, and make disciples. The Holy Spirit changes hearts. God prepares the soil. Jesus builds His church. But we must sow the seed.
Repentance Is More Than Feeling Guilty
Repentance is not simply admitting that we have failed. Repentance means changing direction. It means confessing our passivity. Surrendering our excuses. Returning to the mission Jesus gave us.
It means saying: “Jesus, I have followed You for years, but I have not intentionally helped others follow You. Forgive me. Teach me. Show me who to begin with.”
Repentance moves us from regret to obedience. From consuming to reproducing. From watching the harvest to entering it.
You Do Not Need to Begin With a Crowd
Begin with one person. One family member. One friend. One neighbor. One coworker. One person who is spiritually hungry.
Read a story from Scripture together. Ask what it teaches about God. Ask what it teaches about people. Ask what Jesus wants you to obey. Then help that person share it with someone else.
You do not need a building. You do not need a title. You do not need a large ministry. You need obedience.
This Is Not Condemnation. It Is an Invitation
Jesus is not finished with you. Your years of passivity do not have to define your future. You may not have reproduced disciples yesterday. But you can begin today.

The One who commands us to make disciples also promises to go with us.
So let us repent of a Christianity that receives but never reproduces. Let us surrender our excuses. Let us return to the mission. Let us ask God to make us disciples who make disciples. Who make disciples.
