04. The Story That Defeats Shame
The Power of Stories — Series
Story: The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:1–11)
Every follower of Jesus should carry certain Bible stories wherever they go.
Some stories open conversations.
Some stories answer difficult questions.
Some stories bring healing.
And some stories destroy shame.
The story of the woman caught in adultery is one of those stories.
Few emotions imprison people more than shame.
Shame whispers:
"You've gone too far."
"God could never forgive you."
"Everyone knows what you've done."
"You'll never be clean again."
Many people live under that weight every day.
Some have committed obvious sins.
Others carry hidden failures no one else knows.
Some have been condemned by others.
Many have condemned themselves.
This story reveals the heart of Jesus toward broken people.
The religious leaders dragged a woman into the public square after catching her in adultery.
She wasn't treated like a person.
She was treated like a weapon.
They wanted to trap Jesus.
If He condemned her, His reputation for mercy would be questioned.
If He released her, they could accuse Him of ignoring God's law.
Jesus refused their trap.
Instead of arguing, He stooped and wrote on the ground.
Then He stood and spoke words that have echoed through history:
"He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."
One by one, every accuser walked away.
The oldest first.
Then the younger.
Until only Jesus and the woman remained.
Imagine the silence.
The crowd had disappeared.
The stones were gone.
Only the only truly sinless person left standing remained.
If anyone had the right to condemn her, it was Jesus.
Instead, He asked,
"Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"
She answered,
"No one, Lord."
Then Jesus spoke words that have given hope to millions:
"Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."
Notice what Jesus did.
He did not pretend her sin didn't matter.
He did not redefine right and wrong.
He did not excuse adultery.
But neither did He leave her crushed beneath condemnation.
Grace and truth stood together.
Jesus removed her condemnation.
Then He called her to a new life.
That is still the gospel.
Forgiveness is not permission to continue sinning.
Forgiveness is an invitation to follow the One who sets us free.
This is why every disciple-maker should know this story by heart.
You will meet people convinced they have ruined their lives.
You will meet parents who carry decades of regret.
You will meet addicts who believe they can never change.
You will meet people who assume church is only for those who have their lives together.
When you tell this story, people discover that Jesus is greater than their worst failure.
The cross proves that no repentant sinner is beyond His mercy.
Shame loses its power when people encounter the Savior.
Carry this story with you.
Someone you meet this week may desperately need to hear that while Jesus never ignores sin… He never stops pursuing sinners.
Carry This Story When…
- Someone feels overwhelmed by guilt.
- Someone believes they're beyond God's forgiveness.
- Someone is trapped in shame.
- Someone needs hope instead of condemnation.
