11. Without a Title, Leadership Begins With Obedience
Who Are You Preventing From Leading? · Part 11
The believers scattered by persecution did not wait to be officially appointed.
They did not have impressive titles, large platforms, ministry offices, or institutional permission.
They simply went, and wherever they went, they shared the good news about Jesus.
“Therefore those who were scattered abroad went around preaching the word.”
Acts 8:4 WEB
The gospel spread because ordinary believers understood something we sometimes forget:
The Great Commission was given to every disciple, not merely professional ministers.
You do not need the title “pastor” to care for people.
You do not need the title “evangelist” to share Jesus.
You do not need the title “missionary” to cross a cultural boundary.
You do not need the title “teacher” to help someone obey what Jesus taught.
And you do not need permission from an institution to make disciples who make disciples.
Paul told Timothy:
“The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
2 Timothy 2:2 WEB
That is four generations of multiplication:
Paul → Timothy → faithful people → others
The movement did not depend upon everyone receiving a position. It depended upon every disciple faithfully passing on what they had received.
Titles may recognize leadership, but they do not create it.
Leadership begins when someone hears Jesus and obeys, even when nobody is watching, applauding, or officially authorizing them.
The church must stop communicating, intentionally or unintentionally, that ordinary believers should remain spectators until trained professionals give them a role.
Our responsibility is not to control every believer’s ministry.
It is to equip them, release them, coach them, and trust the Holy Spirit working through them.
Imagine what could happen if every believer understood:
“Wherever I go, I can share Jesus. Whoever I meet, I can serve. Whatever Jesus teaches me, I can pass on to someone else.”
The Great Commission will not be completed by adding more titles.
It will be completed by multiplying obedient disciples.
Challenge: Have we made people believe they need institutional permission to obey the Great Commission?
Perhaps the person God wants to use next is already sitting in our church, waiting for someone to tell them:
You do not need a title to obey Jesus. You only need to begin.
