01. Attendance Is Not the Finish Line
From Church Attenders to Kingdom Laborers · Part 01
James 1:22; Matthew 7:24-27
It is possible to attend church faithfully, and still avoid obeying Jesus.
We can sing the songs.
Listen to the sermon.
Take notes.
Return the following week.
And never do anything with what we heard.
James gives us a sobering warning.
“But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.”
James 1:22 WEB
The greatest danger is not simply that we might forget what we heard.
It is that we might deceive ourselves into believing that hearing is the same as obeying.
Jesus described two people who heard exactly the same words.
One heard and obeyed. He was like a wise man who built his house upon a rock.
The other heard but did not obey. He was like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand.
The difference was not knowledge.
Both heard the truth.
The difference was obedience.
When Hearers Became Doers in Northern India
For many years, Victor John served among the Bhojpuri people of northern India, an area once described as the “graveyard of modern missions.”
He worked faithfully using traditional ministry approaches, but the response remained limited.
Then, in 1994, Victor and his coworkers made an important change.
They began emphasizing obedience-based discipleship.
People were not encouraged merely to accumulate biblical knowledge. They were directed to put God’s Word into practice and pass what they learned to others.
Ordinary people began obeying Scripture and sharing it throughout their families and relational networks.
In 1999, the first Bhojpuri New Testament was released in the people’s heart language. The movement then began growing rapidly.
According to a Lausanne Movement summary, an International Mission Board research team reported that by 2000, more than 224,000 Bhojpuri-background believers were worshipping in over 2,177 new churches.
The breakthrough did not come merely because more people attended Christian meetings.
It came as ordinary people encountered God’s Word, obeyed it, and shared it with others.
Movements do not multiply through hearing alone.
They multiply through obedience.
Gathering with other believers is important for encouragement, prayer, and worship.
But the gathering was never intended to be the destination.
It should equip us to go.
We hear the Word so that we can obey it.
We learn about prayer so that we will pray.
We learn about forgiveness so that we will forgive.
We learn about loving our neighbors so that we will love them.
We learn about sharing the gospel so that we will share it.
We learn about making disciples so that we will make them.
The church was never intended to be an audience watching a few gifted people perform ministry.
It is a spiritual family in which every believer is equipped to participate in the mission of God.
The question is not merely:
“Did I attend church this week?”
The more important questions are:
“What did Jesus teach me?”
“What will I obey?”
“Who will I share it with?”
“Who am I helping follow Jesus?”
A church attender measures faithfulness by presence.
A Kingdom laborer measures faithfulness by obedience.
Attendance matters, but attendance is not the finish line.
It is a preparation for the mission.
Challenge: Have we mistaken regularly attending Christian meetings for faithfully following Jesus?
