11. Do Not Just Tell Them, Show Them

If the people you train can only do the work while you are present, have you equipped them, or made yourself necessary?
It is possible to explain disciple-making clearly and still never prepare someone to make a disciple. They may understand the lesson. They may even agree with it. But when they sit across from a friend who is ready to talk about Jesus, they do not know what to do next.
MAWL gives us a simple way to train them:
Model: Do the work while they are with you. Let them hear how you ask questions, share a Bible story, pray for someone, or lead a discovery Bible study.
Assist: Do it together. Give them a real part to lead, and help when they need it.
Watch: Let them lead while you observe. Afterward, encourage what they did well and help them strengthen what was difficult.
Leave: Entrust them with the work. Remain available to coach them, but give them room to obey and to train someone else.
Jesus sent His disciples out in pairs. They did not spend their entire training period watching Him minister from a distance. They went, practiced, returned, and kept growing. (Luke 10:1)
Paul gave Timothy a similar vision for multiplication: entrust what you have learned to faithful people who will be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2)
That means the goal is bigger than helping someone complete a lesson. The goal is to help them become capable of passing it on.
Think about one tool you use in disciple-making. Could someone you are training use it without you? Could they show another person how?
If the answer is no, the next step may be simple: invite them to come with you. Show them. Do it together. Then let them lead.
Challenge: Are you developing people who can continue without you, or making yourself permanently necessary?
Field assignment: Choose one disciple-making tool this week. Model it for one person, then help that person practice it. Before you finish, ask when they will use it with someone else.
