Tool: The complete disciple-making pathway
Matthew 28:18-20; 2 Timothy 2:2
You can own a pouch full of tools and never build anything.
Over this series, we have talked about reading Scripture, praying, sharing the gospel, finding receptive people, starting groups, and developing leaders. Each tool is simple enough for an ordinary believer to use.
But the goal was never to collect twelve tools.
The goal is to make disciples who make disciples.
Here is how the tools work together.
1. Hear God through Scripture and prayer. Open the Bible. Use SOAPS to ask what it says and what you will obey. Make room to listen as you pray. Disciple-making begins with following Jesus yourself.
2. Obey and share what He reveals. Do not let what you learn end with you. Put it into practice, then tell someone what God is teaching you.
3. Pray for people by name. Write your List of 100. Pray for five people each day. Prayer walk where people live and work. Ask God to open your eyes to people you may have passed by.
4. Share your story and God's story. Tell someone what Jesus has done in your life. Learn a simple way to explain the gospel so you can share it clearly when the opportunity comes.
5. Find receptive people. Offer to pray for someone's needs. Listen. Look for a person who welcomes you, responds to what you share, and may open a door to others.
6. Invite them to explore Scripture with others. Ask, "Would you like to read a Bible story together? Is there anyone you would want to invite?" You do not need to have every answer. Help people discover what Scripture says and consider how they will respond.
7. Begin a 3/3rds discipleship group. Meet regularly. Look back at how people obeyed and shared since the last meeting. Look up to God through Scripture. Look forward by making specific plans to obey, share, and help someone else do the same.
8. Model the tools and release new leaders. Show someone how to lead. Assist while they practice. Watch them lead. Then give them room to continue without you. Paul told Timothy to entrust what he had learned to faithful people who would teach others also.
9. Multiply into new people and places. As disciples grow, help them reach their own relationships and begin new groups. Keep asking: Who is still unreached? Who is ready to take the next step? Who can I equip and release?
This pathway does not require a title, a platform, or a large budget. It does require obedience.
Jesus said, "Go, and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19, WEB). He also promised, "Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20, WEB).
The command is ours. The authority and presence are His.
Final challenge: You now have the tools. Will they remain in your pouch, or will you use them?
Field assignment: Choose one person to pray for by name today. Then choose one tool from this series and use it with someone this week. Before the week ends, help that person take a step they could repeat with someone else.
