Tool #3 for the Disciple-Maker's Tool Pouch: The Prayer Wheel
John 10:27; Luke 11:1
Many believers pray, but never learn how to listen.
We present God with our needs, name the people we want Him to help, ask Him to bless our plans, and then say, "Amen."
We have finished speaking, so we assume the conversation is over.
But what if prayer was never intended to be a speech we give God?
What if prayer is meant to be a relationship in which we speak, listen, respond, surrender, and obey?

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Notice the progression:
His sheep hear His voice. He knows them. They follow Him.
Listening is not the end of prayer. Obedience is.
The disciples watched Jesus heal the sick, cast out demons, calm storms, and teach with authority.
Yet one day they came to Him with this request:
"Lord, teach us to pray."

They understood that the public ministry of Jesus flowed from His private communion with the Father.
If Jesus' first disciples needed to learn how to pray, we should not assume that prayer automatically develops simply because someone attends church.
Prayer is a spiritual discipline that must be learned, practiced, modeled, and passed on.
That is why the Prayer Wheel belongs in every disciple-maker's tool pouch.
For many believers, prayer has been reduced to a list of requests:
"God, heal this person."
"God, provide this need."
"God, protect my family."
"God, bless what I am doing."
There is nothing wrong with asking. Jesus taught us to bring our needs to the Father.
But prayer is much larger than petition.
The Prayer Wheel helps a disciple spend focused time moving through different expressions of prayer, including:
Praise and worship
Waiting quietly before God
Confession and repentance
Reading through Scripture
Watching for what God is doing
Interceding for others
Presenting personal needs
Giving thanks
Meditating on His Word
Listening for His direction
Spiritual Warfare
Praise and worship
Instead of spending an hour repeating requests, divide the hour into twelve five-minute sections.
Five minutes may initially feel uncomfortable, especially during silence.
That discomfort reveals something important.
We may be accustomed to speaking about God, singing about God, and asking things from God without ever becoming still before God.
Listening prayer is not trying to force God to speak. It is not treating every thought as a divine message.
What we believe we hear must always be tested by Scripture and the character of Jesus.
God will never contradict His written Word.
But we must also guard against the opposite danger: living as though God has nothing personal to say to His children through His Word and Spirit.
When you become quiet before Him, ask:
"Father, what are You showing me?"
"Is there a sin I need to confess?"
"Is there someone I need to forgive?"
"Who needs encouragement today?"
"What have You already commanded me to obey?"
Then remain still.
Keep your Bible and a notebook nearby. Write down what comes to mind. Compare it with Scripture. Share important direction with mature believers who can help you discern it.
Most importantly, obey what God shows you.
If prayer never changes our direction, our relationships, our priorities, or our behavior, we may be speaking without truly listening.
A disciple who depends entirely upon a leader to hear from God will always remain spiritually dependent.
Our goal is not to make people dependent upon us.
Our goal is to help them recognize the voice of the Shepherd through Scripture and the Holy Spirit, and then obey Him.
Imagine what could happen if ordinary believers learned to spend focused time with God:
They might confess hidden sin.
They might reconcile with someone they have wounded.
They might receive the name of a person who needs the gospel.
They might recognize a neglected community God is calling them to serve.
They might finally obey something God has been placing before them for months.
The Prayer Wheel does more than help people pray longer.
It teaches disciples to slow down long enough to listen, and listen carefully enough to obey.
Is your prayer life a conversation with God, or a speech you give Him?
Do not measure your prayer life only by how many words you speak.
Ask whether you are giving God room to search your heart, redirect your plans, and call you to obedience.
Set aside one uninterrupted hour this week.
Walk through the twelve sections of the Prayer Wheel, spending five minutes on each one.
Turn off your notifications. Open your Bible. Keep a notebook nearby.
When you reach the listening section, do not rush to fill the silence.
Ask God what He wants you to know, change, or obey.
Then write down one clear action you will take.
Do not merely hear His voice. Follow Him.
