11. Develop Leaders Who Can Help Others Do the Same
Extraordinary DNA That Multiplies – Series
If everyone depends on you to lead, what happens when another household is ready to discover Jesus?
Multiplication requires people who can carry the work forward. Ordinary people can learn to facilitate a gathering, care for others, share Jesus, and help another household begin. They need opportunities to practice, and someone willing to help them.
In the previous articles, we followed a clear path: find a person of peace, help that person gather family and friends, discover Jesus through stories about His life, and grow into a fellowship committed to functioning like the church in Acts 2. Now we help members lead others through that same process.
Paul told Timothy: “The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
2 Timothy 2:2 WEB
Notice the destination: people who can help others. Here is how we develop them through MAWL, Model, Assist, Watch, and Leave.
MODEL: “Let me show you.”
You facilitate a simple 3/3rds gathering. You listen as people share their joys and needs. You follow up on commitments to obey and share. You help everyone discuss a Bible story, then make specific plans to put it into practice. Afterward, ask a member: “What did you notice? Which part would you like to try?” Make the gathering simple enough for someone else to lead.
ASSIST: “Let’s do it together.”
Before the next gathering, help that person prepare. Perhaps they will lead the opening care time or facilitate the Bible discussion. Walk through the questions together. Practice giving people time to answer. At the gathering, let them carry that responsibility. Be available when they need help. A hesitant member begins to discover: “I can do this!”
WATCH: “You lead. I’m here.”
Now they facilitate the gathering while you participate. Resist the urge to fill every silence or answer every question. Afterward, ask: “What went well? What was difficult? What would you try differently?” Give specific encouragement: “You noticed that someone hadn’t spoken and invited them into the conversation. That helped everyone participate.” Offer one practical suggestion they can use next time. Confidence grows through practice and thoughtful feedback.
LEAVE: “You can carry this responsibility.”
Hand over the responsibility you have helped them learn. They lead the gathering. They follow up with someone who is hurting. They help a receptive person invite family and friends to discover Jesus. You continue coaching as needed, giving them room to make decisions and develop.
In Luke 9:1-6, Jesus entrusted His disciples with real work and sent them out to proclaim God’s Kingdom and heal. They learned by going. Our members need real opportunities to serve, too. The person who helped begin the new church continues participating in their original church. That spiritual family keeps praying, encouraging, and supporting them as they help another household grow.
Picture the joy around your table: “I led the discussion this week.” “I prayed with my neighbor.” “The family we’ve been visiting wants to explore stories about Jesus.” Ordinary people begin taking responsibility, and helping others take their next steps.
Who can carry this work forward because you helped them practice it?
At your next gathering, give another member a meaningful responsibility. Help them prepare. Watch them do it. Discuss what they learned. Then give them another opportunity.
Someone at your table may become the person who helps another household fall in love with Jesus. Give them room to begin.
Ordinary People. Extraordinary Movements.
