Voices — Why Make Disciples?
Ten Biblical patterns of how God calls people into His mission — from above, from below, from without, from within, through the overlooked, for the harvest, across cultures, and to multiply leaders — each anchored in a specific passage of Scripture. Walking through these calls helps every believer name their own clear, personal "why" for making disciples, rooted in conviction rather than guilt or program pressure.
The Voice from Above — The Great Commission
Matthew 28:18–20
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
The voice from heaven calls us to go, make disciples, baptize, and teach obedience. This is the supreme command — the heartbeat of heaven for every believer and every movement.
The Voice from Above — “Send Me”
Isaiah 6:8
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”
When we see God’s holiness, our only right response is surrender. The true vision of God always births volunteers for His mission.
The Voice from Across the Lake — Go to Your Own People
Mark 5:1–20
“Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.”
The man once possessed by a legion of demons was transformed — and immediately sent. Jesus calls each of us to begin where we live, among our own people, sharing the story of His mercy.
The Voice from Below — A Cry for Warning
Luke 16:19–28
“‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’”
From the depths of torment, a voice pleads that others might be spared. Hell has its missionaries — may we hear their cry and go while there is still time.
The Voice from Without — “Come Help Us”
Acts 16:9–10
“During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave… concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.”
Across cultures, continents, and boundaries, people are calling, “Come help us.” Will we respond immediately, as Paul did?
The Voice from Within — Compelled to Preach
1 Corinthians 9:16 · Romans 15:20
“For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!”“It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.”
True vision produces holy compulsion — an inner fire that refuses to stay silent until every nation hears.
The Voice of the Lepers — “This Is a Day of Good News”
2 Kings 7:9
“Then they said to each other, ‘What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves.’”
Those who discover the abundance of God’s provision cannot keep it hidden. The gospel is too good to withhold — it must be shared generously.
The Voice for Workers — Pray for the Harvest
Luke 10:2
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”
Every movement begins with prayer. Before we go, we must pray for laborers — and often, as we pray, God sends us.
The Voice Across Cultures — Peter and Cornelius
Acts 10 · Acts 19:10
“In two years’ time, every person in every village and city in the province had heard the word of the Lord.”
God shattered barriers when Peter shared the gospel with Cornelius. The good news is for every tribe and tongue. God can use you to see the same happen in your region.
The Voice to Multiply Leaders
2 Timothy 2:2
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
The vision of Jesus is not just addition but multiplication — leaders raising leaders who disciple others until the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of the Lord.
A Concluding Vision
There are voices all around us — from above, below, within, and without — all echoing heaven’s desire:
That the nations would know Him.
The question is not whether the call is clear.
The question is: Will we answer?
