The Start Track (Basic Discipleship Tools)

An eight-week rhythm for training every new believer to obey and multiply from the very start — not a class to sit through, but a set of practices to do together, week after week, until they become second nature.

  1. 1

    Tell Your Story

Practice a brief, three-minute testimony of life before and after following Jesus, ending with a question that invites a response. Choose five people to tell it to this week.

    Mark 5:1–20

  2. 2

    Tell Jesus’ Story

Practice telling the gospel using 3-Circles or another simple method, then tell your story and Jesus’ story to five people this week.

    1 Corinthians 15:1–8; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23

  3. 3

    Follow & Fish

Write a list of one hundred people you know who need to hear about Jesus — family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates.

    Mark 1:16–20

  4. 4

    Baptism

Find nearby water and baptize every new believer right away, and keep baptizing people immediately as they come to faith.

    Romans 6:3–4; Acts 8:26–40

  5. 5

    The Bible

Memorize and recite the seven Discovery Bible Study questions used in every Simple Meeting.

    2 Timothy 3:14–16

  6. 6

    Talk with God

Pray through the Lord’s Prayer as a group using your hand as a guide — palm for relationship, thumb for worship, first finger for surrender, middle finger to ask, fourth finger to forgive, little finger for protection, then thumb again to close in worship. Or teach the Prayer Cycle instead. See Sail 2 for more prayer tools.

    Matthew 6:9–13

  7. 7

    Hard Times

Share a difficulty faced because of new faith, consider difficulties still to come, and role-play responding with boldness and love. Pray for one another as needs come up.

    Acts 5:17–42; Matthew 5:43–44

  8. 8

    Become a Church

Assess the group against the marks of a healthy church — commitment, baptism, Bible, communion, fellowship, giving, prayer, praise, evangelism, and leaders — and discuss what’s still missing.

    Acts 2:42–47; 1 Corinthians 11:23–34

Every week, no matter which element is the focus, the group tells their story and Jesus’ story to five people. That single rhythm, repeated week after week, is what keeps the track moving forward.
